The DistroWatch web site was first published on 31 May 2001. The concept started as a very simple table comprising of 5 major distributions and the chart only compared a few features (price, version, release date) and a few package versions (the Linux kernel, KDE, GNOME, XFree86, Apache, GCC). Trying to make it slightly more comprehensive and useful (and failing to find anything similar and up-to-date on the Internet), I kept adding more distributions, features and packages until the table reached a fairly reasonable state in terms of information provided. At that stage, I decided to share the table with the Linux community worldwide and moved it from a spreadsheet into an HTML document.

As of the 3rd quarter of 2016 -- and excluding any mirror sites -- DistroWatch serves approximately 17 million pages to over 860,000 unique visitors per month. The main index page is viewed by about 120,000 - 130,000 visitors each working day and 110,000 - 120,000 visitors on weekends, while visits to pages devoted to individual distributions vary substantially - from around 800 - 4,000 page views per day for major Linux distributions (Mint, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora) to about 20 a day for some of the lesser known and regional distributions. The majority of visitors come from the USA, followed by Germany, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Canada, Brazil, Russia and Spain. Please see the Awstats analysis for more detailed information.

At present, DistroWatch accepts new advertisements for the main index page and the resources page (articles, reviews, interviews). Two advertising styles are offered. The first one is a "leaderboard" (728x90 pixels) displayed just below the main navigation bar. The second style are advertising areas within the two sidebars on the main page and right sidebars on the resources pages (the size vary, but it should not be larger than that of a 160x160 pixel banner).
These are the current impression-based rates for above-the-fold leaderboard (728x90px): - 100,000 impressions for $220.00 USD (220 cents per 1,000 impressions)
- 200,000 impressions for $360.00 USD (180 cents per 1,000 impressions)
- 500,000 impressions for $700.00 USD (140 cents per 1,000 impressions)
- 1 million impressions for $1,200.00 USD (120 cents per 1,000 impressions)
- 2 million impressions for $1,800.00 USD (90 cents per 1,000 impressions)
- 5 million impressions for $3,000.00 USD (60 cents per 1,000 impressions)
These are the current click-based rates for leaderboard (728x90px) advertisements: - 1,000 clicks for $800.00 USD (80 cents per click)
- 2,000 clicks for $1,500.00 USD (75 cents per click)
- 5,000 clicks for $3,000.00 USD (60 cents per click)
- 10,000 clicks for $5,000.00 USD (50 cents per click)
The above prices are subject to change without notice.
To put these rates into perspective, $220 will buy you approximately 3 - 7 days of advertising (shared with other advertisers). The click-through rates normally vary between 0.05% and 1%, with the average being 0.4%. If you are new to advertising, we'll gladly assist you with advice on increasing the effectiveness of your advertising campaign at no cost. All advertisers will get access to advertising reports, which display information about the number of impressions, number of banner clicks and basic information about each visitor who clicked on the banner (including the visitor's IP address, country of origin and browser string). Advertisers are permitted to modify their banners or any other aspect of the advertising campaign at any time during the campaign at no additional cost.

Thanks to the GeoIP database it is possible to determine the geographical location of visitors browsing these pages. This opens up possibilities for regional advertising for more accurate targeting of intended audience. If you offer a product that is specifically designed for users in your own country, you can reduce the advertising cost by making your advertisement appear to visitors from your own country only.

CryptoCoin.cc was first launched in December 2014 with the goal of creating a logical and searchable database of popular cryptocurrencies, similar to how DistroWatch organises the ever-growing number of Linux distributions and other free operating systems. Currently the site receives fewer than 1,000 visitors per day, but hopefully it will grow in line with the growing popularity of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
