Rate this project | The Devuan GNU+Linux distribution is a fork of Debian which strives to provide a Linux distribution without systemd software. The project is now approximately two years old and has published its first release candidate. It can be adopted as an upgrade path from Debian "Wheezy" or Debian "Jessie". "This Devuan 'Jessie' release candidate is as close as we can get to a 'long term support' universal base distribution free from systemd, in the original spirit of Debian. The final Devuan 'Jessie' release will follow shortly and then we will turn our attention to 'Ascii', the current testing branch. What has improved in Devuan 'Jessie': the WiFi auto-detection problems present in the beta release series have been fixed; the problem that prevented Samba from installing has been fixed; Devuan now directly provides different base distribution flavours - desktop live, embedded, minimal live and installer ISO; Devuan's Simple Distro Kit (SDK) is rapidly approaching maturity...." Rate this project | Steve Revill has announced the release of a new development build of RISC OS Open, a special edition of RISC OS designed for the Raspberry Pi single-board computer. RISC OS, developed by the inventors of the ARM processor architecture, is not based on UNIX, Linux or any other existing system. The freely available Raspberry Pi variant uses its own desktop environment (called Pinboard) and applications. This is the project's first release in over two years: "It has been long anticipated after the record success of our previous hit (RC14) in February 2015, but the wait is over. Right up-to-date support for the latest ARMv8 in the main OS ROM, bundled with hundreds of fixes and improvements to the OS. The previous release was based on RISC OS 5.21 which was current at the time. There are new and updated applications on the disc too, as well as significant improvements completed thanks to donations in the form of updated JPEG support, EDID monitor detection and the first few pieces of USB work. Rate this project | Vladimir Potapov has announced the release of ROSA R9, a major update of the distribution which started as a fork of Mandriva Linux and which retains many of Mandriva's tools. The new version comes in two desktop variants - KDE 4 or Plasma Desktop 5.9: "ROSA R9 is the first release based on the new package platform 2016.1. The distribution is targeted mainly at Linux advocates eager to try new software. According to the updates policy, the R9 version of the ROSA distribution will have 4 years of technical support. Technical changes compared to ROSA R8: most of the system libraries, compilers and system/user software were updated to their new and latest versions (glibc, boost, GCC, Clang); a new additions to the repositories were made, e.g. LDC (the D language compiler), Meson (a powerful open-source build system); added a glibc patch, drastically boosting the load speed of the dynamic shared objects (DSO)...." Rate this project | The Amnesic Incognito Live System (better known as Tails) is a Debian-based live DVD/USB with the goal of providing complete Internet anonymity for the user. The Tails project has announced the release of Tails 2.12 which features the GNOME Sound Recorder application and version 4.9.13 of the Linux kernel. Tails uses the Tor network to redirect network traffic and this release saw the project remove the alternative I2P anonymity network from the distribution. "We installed again GNOME Sound Recorder to provide a very simple application for recording sound in addition to the more complex Audacity. Sound clips recorded using GNOME Sound Recorder are saved to the Recordings folder. We removed I2P, an alternative anonymity network, because we unfortunately have failed to find a developer to maintain I2P in Tails. Maintaining software like I2P well-integrated in Tails takes time and effort and our team is too busy with other priorities. Upgrade Linux to 4.9.13. Rate this project | The deepin project, which develops a Debian-based Linux distribution with a custom desktop environment and several applications developed in-house, has announced the release of deepin 15.4. Despite a minor increment in the version number (from 15.3 to 15.4), this is a major release with many improvements and package upgrades: "deepin 15.4 has brand new design for Control Center and desktop. It adopted new blur and transparent style, new interactions for hot corner and window manager, along with selective wallpapers, full-screen installation interface, latest stable kernel version and original Deepin applications. It has added traditional Chinese (Hong Kong) and Amharic language support. The Control Center has brand-new design and interactions; the homepage shows quick-access icons for common settings to make the operation easier and faster. The newly designed installer has full-screen interface, fuzzy background, smart detection, friendly reminder and 'scan QR code for feedback'; you can experience the incredible pleasure of deepin just after drinking a cup of coffee." Rate this project | Rescatux is a Debian-based distribution that features desktop tools for recovering broken Linux distributions. The project has released a new development version, Rescatux 0.41 Beta 1. The new development snapshot features several improvements to help users work with UEFI systems. "I couldn't have released a stable Rescatux without UEFI options so I had to add them. So here there are. Please test them and give us feedback either on the mailing list or in the bugs. Depending on how these new options replace Boot Repair functionality I will remove it from Rescatux. Many people, somehow, are using Boot Repair inside Rescatux while we don't support it and that should be fixed in the next Rescatux stable release." While Rescatux can now work with UEFI-enabled systems, the distribution does not support booting on computers where Secure Boot is enabled. Rate this project | Pat Riehecky has announced the release of Scientific Linux 6.9, the latest build of the distribution's legacy branch, compiled from source package for the recently-released Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.9. As is the case with the upstream distribution, this branch of Scientific Linux will be supported until November 2020. "Scientific Linux 6.9 i386/x86_64. Scientific Linux 6.x users please run 'yum clean expire-cache'. Major differences from Scientific Linux 6.8: sl-release - there is a new Scientific Linux End User License Agreement (EULA), the EULA now contains information about the U.S. Government contract under which Fermilab produces Scientific Linux; sl-release-notes - updated for Scientific Linux 6.9. Rate this project | Heiko Zuecker has announced the release of Devil-Linux 1.8.0, a major update of the project's independently-developed distribution that runs directly from the live CD and is designed primarily for server, firewall and router deployments: "Devil-Linux 1.8.0 has been released. This is a major overhaul of Devil-Linux. Most programs and libraries have been updated and the unmaintained ones have been removed. This build is based on the just-released Ubuntu 17.04 and includes, for the first time, the Budgie desktop: "Ultimate Edition 5.4 was built from the Ubuntu 17.04 'Zesty Zapus' tree using a combination of Tmosb (TheeMahn's Operating System Builder) and work by hand. Tmosb is also included in this release (1.9.8), allowing you to do the same. It has the capabilities to build over 3,000 operating systems. This release is not a long-term supported (LTS) release. Currently I have only built the tip of the iceberg. I have finished building Ultimate Edition 5.4 and can build 5.5 based on Zesty (17.04). Our beta testers asked for inclusion of Budgie and I have made it so. I try and listen to my people. This release has the Budgie desktop; however it is not set as default. Rate this project | The Ubuntu Studio team has announced the release of Ubuntu Studio 17.04. The new release of this Linux distribution for audio, video and graphic artists offers the same package base as Ubuntu 17.04 and includes nine months of security updates. According to the release announcement, there are a few small changes in this new version, including swapping the system-config-printer-gnome utility with system-config-printer and the Krita drawing program has been added to the default installation. The Darktable software has been dropped from the 32-bit installation media. "We are happy to announce the release of our latest version, Ubuntu Studio 17.04 Zesty Zapus. As a regular version, it will be supported for 9 months. Since it’s just out, you may experience some issues, so you might want to wait a bit before upgrading.
